Bible has been always the difficult book to understand as it’s out of my Nepali and Western Culture. The Bible is off-course a mid-eastern culture but was later westernized.
One thing that has always troubled me is the Eye of a Needle reply to rich young man by Jesus Christ.I finally understood “And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”Matthew 19:24 in terms of Jewish culture yesterday night before I went to sleep.
Jewish and mid-eastern culture, history and facts.
Jerusalem – a big city at that time was walled around for the protection. The wall had gates for the visitors and wagons to enter city of Jerusalem. However during the night all the gates would be kept close except for one gate which would be half open for tradesman, traveler, merchant and other local people who brought camel caravan with them to city of Jerusalem-the then trade and pilgrimage hub.
This small half open gate was called Eye of a Needle because it was too small for the standing camels, hence the camels had to stoop, crouch and kneel while passing through the small opening of the gate. The camels had to go through this gate with great struggle by removing the baggage and burdens outside. The gate was for humans and attle to pass during the night but the bigger animals like elephant and camel really had painful struggle to make through. Such type of Eye of Needle Gate was popular in every middle eastern countries, Persian and Muslim cutlure.
What was Jesus saying to Rich Young man?
Jesus was saying to Rich Young man. “You are rich, so distribute all your wealth to poor and then come and follow me.” But the Rich Young man was sad and left following Jesus. Then Jesus said it was easy for camel to pass through eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the heaven.
To enter heaven, every man must stoop, crouch, kneel to humble themselves before GOD by focusing on heavenly kingdom. It’s not easy unless humans prioritize Christ over worldly pleasure because the Heaven’s gate is narrow and rear like Eye of Needle Gate.
There is only one way and gate to enter heavenly Jerusalem city and that narrow needle hole gate is Jesus Christ himself.
Enter in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be who go in there: Matthew 7:13
I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. John 10:9
